P.E and Sports Funding

PE and School Sport Funding

The Government is providing funding for schools to deliver substantial primary school sport. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

At St Laurence’s Catholic Primary School we believe that sport plays an important role in contributing to the health and wellbeing of our children. Our school is held in high regard for our positive reputation in the field of sport and we aspire for sporting excellence and full participation in cultural, team and extra-curricular activities.

PE Curriculum

A wide range of activities are delivered in school which aim to engage and inspire all children. We are also committed to ensuring that all children receive a high quality, well-planned Physical Education Curriculum.

Throughout each academic year each child will participate in games, athletics, dance and gymnastics lessons. Swimming lessons are also provided for some classes throughout the year.

The Wider Curriculum

The provision of quality PE and Sport has a high profile in our school and permeates throughout many aspects of school life.

Each year we facilitate themed weeks such as Health and Well Being Week where children participate in a wide range of activities.

During our residential visits, children are given opportunities to participate in many different activities which may include, orienteering, assault courses and abseiling.

In the summer term we hold our annual Sports Days were we encourage participation of all children throughout a variety of events.

Talented children are signposted to local clubs and events to encourage them to develop their skills.

Our school also believes it is important for the children to meet local sporting role models. Visitors have included successful ex-pupils who play nationally and internationally and also local community members who have gone on to sporting success.

Beyond the School Day

The school provides a wide range of extra-curricular clubs for the children which are organised by school staff or outside providers.

Children enjoy the opportunity to work with different teachers and instructors and have the opportunity to try many sports such as high fives, dance, cross country, football, rugby, cricket, judo and athletics.

Extra Curricula Activity Timetable

Our school is an active member of the Children’s University Scheme that recognises and rewards those children who commit and participate in at least 30 hours of extra school activities in a year. In 2022 there were 70 of our pupils who graduated through the Children’s University Scheme at a special ceremony at the local Hope University Campus.  We were also awarded with a special recognition award for being one of 5 schools who have been involved with the project since its introduction 14 years ago.

As a school we enjoy an excellent sporting reputation and encourage our children to participate in a wide range of team sports and competitions.

Primary school experiences are pivotal to the children’s future perception of physical activity and we believe that children leave our school equipped to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits. For those who relish the competitive element, they gain the skills, confidence and relevant experience to succeed at their chosen level of discipline.
